Country's copyright registrations soar
The Copyright Protection Center of China announced last week that the number of software copyright registrations nationwide in the first nine months of 2017 increased 96.9 percent from the same period last year, a record growth rate for the last five years. In September alone, there were 74,351 registrations, up 90.2 percent year-on-year. Guangdong province topped the nation with 17,455 registrations, followed by Beijing with 16,974.

Global effort stops fake goods group
The Ministry of Public Security and the United States Department of Homeland Security have cooperated in the investigation of a large cross-border intellectual property infringement case. The Chinese police seized 36 suspects and found more than 3,000 counterfeit luxury products bearing trademarks, including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Rolex and Cartier, in seven hideouts. The suspect group accepted online orders in China and sold the products to the US and other countries and regions. They made 100 million yuan ($15.3 million) in illegal sales revenue.

Specialist school opens in Handan
The first intellectual property school in the province was recently unveiled in Handan Polytechnic College. While developing IP professionals, the school also has an IP rights protection center and a patent search center. It has introduced seven patent agencies to provide services for local technology-based companies. Officials of the college said the school is the result of an innovative attempt of cooperation with the government. Its students are employees from local companies.

Counterfeit gang, toothpaste seized
The police of Chuzhou announced that they have cracked down on a group that sold counterfeit toothpaste, involving illegal potential value of more than 15 million yuan ($2.3 million). They launched the investigation in March and found the group was selling counterfeits in more than 20 cities nationwide. The police of five provinces launched a joint operation to seize 33 suspects along with about 100,000 tubes of toothpaste and 300,000 packages.

Industrial design fair kicks off
With the theme of "future design, smart manufacturing", the fifth Shenzhen International Industrial Design Fair was held on Nov 5-7. This year the fair focused on the latest designs and technologies in fields including smart hardware, wearable devices, robots, drones, e-sports, virtual reality and jewelry. The fair covered an area of 15,000 square meters, with more than 3,000 exhibits from about 30 countries and regions around the world.
