Forfeits at China Open net fines

China Daily | Updated: 2017-11-02 07:23

Rather than being suspended for forfeiting matches, the world's top three male table tennis players were welcomed back to the ITTF World Tour on Tuesday after agreeing to pay fines of $20,000 each.

During the Seamaster ITTF World Tour Platinum China Open in Chengdu in June, China's Ma Long, Fan Zhendong and Xu Xin forfeited their round-of-16 matches by not showing up to play.

The trio did not provide the ITTF or the tournament organizing committee with any reason for their behavior, which resulted in the global sanctioning body setting up a disciplinary panel to investigate the incident and determine appropriate punishment.
