Decisive period to complete tasks
In his report at the opening of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that China is now in a decisive period if it is to realize the building of a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way by 2020. He said that during this period the government should focus on key tasks, prevent and defuse major risks, and take targeted measures for poverty alleviation and advance pollution prevention and treatment.
Calling the years a decisive period means China is yet to complete these major tasks. The government must follow a problem-oriented approach and carry out a targeted approach to prevent and defuse risks, eliminate residual poverty, and advance pollution prevention and treatment. These are the key challenges China faces in its efforts to build a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way.
Preventing and defusing major risks serves as a solid foundation for it to build such a society, and as Xi warned in his report, failure to do so will confront the nation with a big security threat, and its efforts to build a well-off society may be interrupted.
