Introduction to CAMS and PUMC
Peking Union Medical College, founded in 1917, was the first key medical school in China to offer an eight-year curriculum in clinical medicine and undergraduate courses in nursing.
The Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, established in 1956, is the only state-level academic center for medical sciences and multidisciplinary medical research institution.
CAMS and PUMC share the same administration and faculty.
CAMS provides strong scientific support and a highly-qualified faculty, while PUMC cultivates high-level medical expertise.
The academy and college are interdependent and complementary. Their teaching and research promote and enhance each other. Together, there are 19 institutes, six hospitals and seven schools affiliated with PUMC and CAMS.
PUMC sticks to the school principle of an elite medical education program: "small-scale enrollment, high-level training and top-quality output". It aims to cultivate comprehensive medical human resources, integrating clinical, research and teaching expertise with sound knowledge, a rigorous academic attitude, noble medical ethics and high-quality skill sets.
Through longstanding practice, PUMC has made great efforts to cultivate and attract talents, to create and unite modern scientific ideas, and to form its school spirit of "rigor, excellence, innovation and devotion."
PUMC has fostered many famous clinical scientists, medical educators, nursing experts and healthcare administrators, contributing to China's medical education, medical research, and the progress and development of the Chinese medical and health services, gaining a high reputation at home and abroad.
CAMS and PUMC boast a solid scientific and research strength. Their medical scientific research covers every domain in medical science, including basic medicine, clinical medicine, preventive medicine, pharmaceuticals and other related disciplines, such as biology, physics and chemistry.
There are six directly affiliated hospitals: Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Fuwai Hospital, Cancer Hospital, Plastic Surgery Hospital, Blood Diseases Hospital and Skin Disease Hospital.
Consolidating the general hospital and specialized hospitals, CAMS and PUMC maintains domestic leadership and an advanced level abroad in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, malignant tumors, blood diseases, dermatological diseases, hereditary diseases, organ reconstruction, autoimmune diseases, endocrine diseases, as well as other complicated and severe conditions. They feature a health delivery system of integrating education with research that is prestigious both in China and abroad.
CAMS and PUMC attach great importance to international academic exchange and cooperation in science and technology, and have established scientific research, education and medical partnerships with medical colleges and research institutions from dozens of countries or regions around the world.
There are more than 200 foreign experts and scholars that the CAMS and PUMC have recognized as an Honorary Professor or Visiting Professor, including several Nobel Prize laureates. PUMC has signed exchange agreements with many medical colleges, organizing exchange programs for senior students for short-term clinical rotations.
At present, PUMC aims to be the leading research college to feature an elite education program, the best in China and globally state-of-the-art. CAMS' development strategy outlines its aim to be the base of Chinese medical scientific research and innovation.
