Troops breach 3-year IS siege on eastern city

Government troops and allied forces reached the eastern city of Deir el-Zour on Tuesday, breaching a nearly 3-year Islamic State group siege on government-held areas of the contested city near the Iraqi border, Syrian state TV reported. It said troops advancing from the west reached the outskirts of the city and broke the siege after IS defenses collapsed.

Plane lands safely after bird strike

A Japan Airlines plane bound for New York returned safely to a Tokyo airport on Tuesday after the pilot reported a bird strike to an engine during takeoff. Television footage showed red flame flickering from the left engine as the plane ascended from the runway. JAL said the Boeing 777 carrying 233 passengers and 15 crew members requested an emergency landing minutes after takeoff.

Stamps to celebrate new Star Wars movie

A set of official British postage stamps that are out of this world landed on Monday to celebrate the latest Star Wars movie. Droids and Aliens from Star Wars: The Last Jedi are featured in the eight special stamps unveiled by Royal Mail. They were illustrated by British artist Malcolm Tween.
