Administration reform pilot project announced

The State Intellectual Property Office has announced a pilot project for comprehensive IP administration reform in the following regions: Xiamen in Fujian province, Qingdao in Shandong province, Changsha in Hunan province, Suzhou in Jiangsu province and Xuhui district of Shanghai. The status is valid for a year. The rollout of the first list comes as a response to the central government's calling for comprehensive reforms in the IP sphere, ranging from creation, use and protection to management and services.

Annual piracy fight focuses on copyright

Multiple government agencies launched the Jianwang Operation 2017 on Tuesday. The annual joint operation against online piracy started in 2005, and this year its focuses will include copyrights of the press and publication business, e-commerce platforms, apps on mobile devices and online storage.

Great Wall's Haval H6 tops first half sales

The Haval H6 from Baoding-based Great Wall Motors was the best-selling SUV model in the first half of this year, with sales of 226,500 vehicles. Statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers showed that 4.5 million SUVs were sold in China over the period, 2.7 million of which were Chinese brands. Eight of the 10 best-selling SUV models were Chinese brands. Tiguan from Volkswagen and Envision from Buick were the only two foreign models in the top 10 sales ranking.

Guangzhou conference to showcase creativity

The provincial IP office and the city government of Guangzhou will host the 2017 Guangdong Intellectual Property Fair in late August, the first IP-themed fair in the province. The event will showcase the latest innovation achievements, creative products and IP financing models. There will also be forums, conferences, auctions, promotion campaigns and a competition for innovation and entrepreneurship projects.

Bengbu court hears shoe counterfeit case

A court of Bengbu city last week heard the largest counterfeit sports shoes case in China. Since December 2011, a local company had been manufacturing counterfeit Converse and Vans shoes until the police raided it in December 2015 and found 450,000 pairs of shoes in its warehouse. Sales records showed the company had sold more than 20 million pairs with total illegal revenue of 370 million yuan ($54.8 million).

Guangdong firm hit with 45,000 yuan fine

The Shanghai IP office recently imposed one of its biggest fines in recent years to a company for using faked patent information. The office found the Guangdong-based company displayed three patent certificates in a showroom in Shanghai, but none of them belongs to the company. There were an additional two patent labels on the product packages, but one of them had expired and the other was not approved. The office confiscated the company's illegal income and fined it 45,000 yuan ($6,662).
