The apartments were sold to the former residents for about 600 yuan per square meter, while the market price is 2,500 to 3,000 yuan. Beijing authorities are taking steps to restore the city's historic architecture that includes hutong, or narrow alleyways, and siheyuan, or traditional courtyard residences.

In December, the city's environmental construction planning division launched a campaign to demolish illegal constructions in about 1,500 hutong.
