China No 22 for global innovation
China ranks No 22 on the Global Innovation Index 2017 released by the World Intellectual Property Organization, Cornell University and business school INSEAD on June 15, moving up by three notches year-on-year. The country is once again the only middle-income economy in the top 25 of the innovation list. It has progressed in five indicator categories, including institutions, creative output and knowledge and technology output. The index report has become a main benchmarking tool for global policymakers and corporate executives.

Students learning to 'adore creativity'
Multiple authorities in the province recently released a notice about intellectual property education among primary and middle schools. It aims to train students' innovative spirit and encourage them to respect knowledge, adore creativity and protect IP, officials said. The province plans to first identify 10 to 15 IP education pilot schools and will house 10 to 15 model schools by 2020 that have successful, well-established IP education work systems.

Military, civilian tech expo held
An exhibition focusing on the integration of military and civilian intellectual property was held on Sunday during the 2017 China Cross-Straits Technology and Projects Fair. Several integrated patent projects were displayed and nearly 2,000 decoded national defense patents could be seen on an electronic screen. Before the event, the provincial IP authorities organized exchange programs for civilian companies and military industry enterprises, research institutions and national defense universities.

Procuratorate wins protection award
The Shanghai People's Procuratorate won the National Public Body Award of the 2017 Global Anti-Counterfeiting Awards from the Global Anti-Counterfeiting Group. The awards ceremony was held in Paris on June 7 - World Anti-Counterfeiting Day. The Shanghai People's Procuratorate has set up a finance and IP department, the first of its kind in China. The mechanism has significantly increased the efficiency of prosecutors to tackle IP crimes, according to the GACG.

Police target fake, substandard goods
Online sales of counterfeits and substandard goods, as well as online piracy are the focused areas for Hunan's IP efforts this year, according to a recently unveiled guideline. Local law enforcement agencies will organize campaigns targeting food, medicines, cosmetics and medical equipment on e-commerce platforms. The government will establish blacklists for IP rights violators and counterfeiters this year.
