Sustainable renovation of Tongji University's Yunchou Building
Tongji University's Yunchou Building was constructed in 1983 and occupies a total area of 4,127 square meters.
The name of the building, yun chou, is derived from the ancient historical chronology of the first century BC, the Records of the Grand Historian, known as the Shiji. Specifically, the wording refers to the management and formation of troops on the battle-field.
As the main office of the university's faculty of economics and management, the name Yunchou today implies planning and improving strategies.
In 2014, the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, China's Ministry of Science and Technology and Tongji University initiated the sustainable recovery and renovation of the building.
The project was realized together with Archea, an Italian architecture firm, and the Architecture Institute of Planning and Research of Tongji University, along with consultation support from Professor Li Xiangning from the faculty of architecture and urban planning.
The restoration works were completed on the 110th anniversary of the foundation of Tongji University in May 2017.
In line with the original meaning of its name, following its refurbishment the building will be a constant, guiding light for excellence in the fields of organization and management sciences, on a national and international level. It will be dedicated to global sustainable development.
