Prachanda resigns as prime minister
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal announced his resignation from the post at a special address to the nation on Wednesday. With this, Dahal's 10-month-long tenure has come to an end. His stint began on Aug 4 following the resignation of then-prime minister K.P Sharma Oli. In his state address, the prime minister, who is better known as Prachanda, said his party will continue alliance with Nepali Congress, the largest party in the parliament, to form the new government.

30 migrants drown in the Mediterranean
More than 30 migrants, mostly toddlers, drowned on Wednesday when about 200 people without life jackets fell from a boat into the sea off the Libyan coast before they could be hauled into waiting rescue boats. The boat was near a rescue vessel when it suddenly listed and many migrants tumbled into the Mediterranean Sea, Italian Coast Guard commander Cosimo Nicastro said.

Rape victim officer commits suicide
A female naval officer apparently killed herself after being allegedly raped by a senior colleague, a Defense Ministry spokesman said on Thursday. The victim, a lieutenant, was found dead in her single-room apartment on Wednesday, where a message was found reading: "Tomorrow, I won't be in this world any longer." She had reportedly told her boyfriend that she had been raped. Military police have arrested a navy captain as a suspect.

Fiat Chrysler sued over emissions
The US government is suing Fiat Chrysler, alleging that some of its diesel pickup trucks and Jeep SUVs cheat on emissions tests. The lawsuit filed on Tuesday marks the second time the government has gone after an automaker alleging use of software on diesel engines that allows them to emit more pollution on the road than during Environmental Protection Agency lab testing. Last year, the government accused Volkswagen of cheating on tests, and the company ended up pleading guilty to criminal charges in a scandal that cost VW more than $20 billion in the United States alone.
Chinese female hiker found dead
After 24 hours of searching, a missing Chinese female hiker was found dead on Tuesday at the base of a frozen waterfall on Mount Whitney in California. Qiu Dongying, 27, is believed to have fallen 18 meters from the top of the waterfall through a snow chute. The waterfall is located on the southwest side of Outpost Camp, about 400 meters off trail.
