More locales to process trademark filings in June

Another 20 locales across China are expected to be authorized to process trademark filings in June, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce said in a recent policy on promoting Chinese brands' building. Currently, 56 local offices nationwide have been approved to deal with trademark applications. In addition, trademark infringements and illegal agencies will be included in China's enterprises information publicity system in the future, according to the new policy. SAIC said the brands that have been granted the status of well-known trademarks or geographical indications, are related to foreign businesses, or have been recognized as longstanding business names are a focus of the protection.

Innovative drugs to receive key support

Innovative drugs using marine resources, which have proprietary intellectual property and huge market potential, will receive priority support from the Chinese government, according to a national maritime economy development initiative for the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20) recently co-released by the National Development and Reform Commission and the State Oceanic Administration. Modern production of maritime resource-based traditional Chinese medicines and highly efficient, new marine bio-products are also included in the key sectors, according to the policy.

Customs seize 42m suspected items in 2016

The General Administration of Customs seized some 17,400 shipments suspected of intellectual property infringements in 2016, which involved more than 42.05 million items of goods, according to an annual IP protection report released by the administration. The report found that the majority of the seizures are consumer goods, intended to be shipped by sea or post. The customs noted a continuous rise in infringements on Chinese IP and violations in import.

Dalian tech university creates top master gear

A research team led by Wang Liding, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor of mechanical engineering at Dalian University of Technology, developed a top-level precision master gear. Its proprietary technologies have filled a void of its kind in China and abroad, industry insiders said. The university said experts from the Chinese Society for Measurement, the China Machinery Industry Federation and the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society have appraised the technologies and equipment related to the class-one master gear and recognized its outperformance.

First robot IP facility signed in Changzhou

China's first intellectual property protection center of robots and smart hardware, which was signed with Changzhou, Jiangsu province, during an advanced manufacturing industry fair in the city, is designed to promote the sector's healthy growth and reduce costs of maintaining rights. The center will offer a range of IP services, including patent filings, dispute conciliation, legal risk pre-warning and patent navigation research. Since 2013, China has been the largest robot market in the world for three consecutive years, with Changzhou at the forefront of the country by yearly robot production.

Young inventors won intl prizes at Paris expo

With 10 inventions, a delegation comprising primary and middle school representatives from Changsha, capital of Hunan province, won four silver prizes and four bronze ones, as well as two awards presented to participants at an international invention expo in Paris from late April to early May. It outperformed other local groups from China. Some European companies have contacted the young inventors to seek cooperation in commercialization.

Center kicks off event to improve local brands

Hainan province has initiated a campaign to foster and promote local brands featuring proprietary intellectual property and core competitiveness, according to its small and medium-sized enterprises service center. Via training and exchanges, the event aims to help local businesses to improve brand management, bring in experts on brand design, research and marketing from abroad and enhance their innovation capacities. Outstanding brands will receive support in finance and policy from the local authorities.
