Japan

All crew members found at crash site

The Self-Defense Force personnel have found all four male crew members of a military aircraft that crashed in a mountainous region of Hokkaido on Monday. The ministry said on Tuesday that the crew members have been transferred by helicopter to Hakodate and are feared dead. But an official announcement on their conditions are yet to be made.

United States

Court hears case against travel ban

Federal judges on Monday peppered a lawyer for President Donald Trump with questions about whether the administration's travel ban discriminates against Muslims and zeroed in on the president's campaign statements, the second time in a week the rhetoric has faced judicial scrutiny. Jeffrey Wall, defending the travel ban, said the executive order should be reinstated because it falls well within the president's authority. The court did not gave an immediate ruling.

Diesel pollution underestimated

Pollution from diesel trucks, buses and cars globally is more than 50 percent higher than levels shown in government lab tests, a new study said. That extra pollution translated to another 38,000 deaths from soot and smog in 2015, the researchers estimated. The work published on Monday in the journal Nature was a follow-up to the testing that uncovered the Volkswagen diesel emissions cheating scandal.

Greece

Seamen and journalists on strike

Greek seamen and journalists have walked off the job a day before a nationwide general strike to protest new austerity measures as the country struggles to emerge from a seven-year financial crisis. The 48-hour seamen's strike starting on Tuesday will leave ferries servicing the country's islands tied up in port for two days. Journalists are holding a 24-hour strike, pulling news broadcasts off the air from 6 am. Wednesday's general strike is expected to affect services across the country.

Indonesia

Albino orangutan named 'Alba'

A conservation group said a rare albino orangutan rescued in Indonesia has been named "Alba" after thousands of suggestions were sent from around the world. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation said the name means "white" in Latin and "dawn" in Spanish. It hopes the animal will be an ambassador for the critically endangered species. The 5-year-old female was rescued from captivity in a village on Borneo island on April 29.
