Prince Philip will cut his workload

Prince Philip, the consort known for his steadfast support of his wife Queen Elizabeth II, will retire from royal duties this fall, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday. Philip, 95, made the decision himself with the full support of the queen, the palace said. The royal, known as the Duke of Edinburgh, has suffered from heart disease and other ailments in recent years.

Two dead in college shooting

A gunman on Wednesday shot and killed a woman on a college campus in Dallas, before committing suicide, police said, two days after a deadly stabbing at another college in Texas. Adrian Victor Torres, 21, shot and killed Janeera Nickol Gonzalez, 20, in a common study area at North Lake College in Irving, the Irving Police Department said. The school would be closed for the rest of the week.

Germany

Military to probe far-right case

The German military's chief of staff is promising a full investigation into how internal checks failed in the case of an army officer arrested last week on suspicion that he was part of a small group planning a far-right attack. Volker Wieker said on ARD television on Thursday that there's no "general suspicion" of widespread right-wing extremism in the Bundeswehr armed forces, but the case raises "justified concern".

Nation has more seniors than kids

For the first time in Canada's history, there are more seniors than children. Statistics Canada said on Wednesday new census figures show there are now 5.9 million Canadians aged 65 and older. They outnumber the 5.8 million children 14 and under. The first of the post-World War II baby boomers born from 1946 to 1965 began turning 65 in 2011 and many have retired.

Woman leaves after losing 325 kg

An Egyptian woman who lost about 325 kilograms after undergoing weight-loss surgery in an Indian hospital left for the United Arab Emirates on Thursday for long-term treatment. Eman Ahmed, who weighed more than 500 kg when she was flown to Mumbai for surgery in February, was reportedly the world's heaviest woman. Doctors reduced the size of her stomach to help her lose weight.

Indonesia

Komodo dragon bites tourist

A Komodo dragon has bitten an overly inquisitive tourist who ignored warnings about getting too close to the enormous reptile while it was eating, a national park official said.

The tourist from Singapore was bitten on his leg on Wednesday while taking pictures of the Komodo dragon, the world's largest lizard.
