National drug project helps to break foreign monopoly
The Ministry of Science and Technology announced at a news conference in late February that a national major science and technology project for drug innovation has helped China to break foreign companies' monopoly in biopharmaceuticals used in the treatment of lung cancer and leukemia, as well as the prevention and control of drug-resistant bacteria. Domestically developed small molecule drugs for the treatment of cancer have caused overseas patented medicines to fall in price by 50 percent.

New State-level evaluation, certification center opens
China's first national intellectual property evaluation and certification center opened on Feb 28, with its online assessment system going online on the same day. Along with the State Intellectual Property Office's global patent database and fully-trained team of analysts, the SIPO-affiliated center is expected to facilitate IP operation and commercialization, said SIPO Deputy Commissioner He Hua.

Pilot portal goes online in provincial capital
A national pilot portal of public intellectual property services, which went online in the provincial capital Xi'an on Feb 24, features shared research resources for both civil and national defense purpose. The online platform includes an IP market and a big data service center, and is designed to promote the interactive development of civil and national defense industries. The Ministry of Finance and the State Intellectual Property Office began to develop the public service platform in the northwestern province in 2015.

International flower expo draws large crowds
More than 2,000 flowers, including new varieties, went on display at an international orchid and camellia expo held in Dali in mid-February. The flowers drew scores of visitors to the weeklong event, which aimed to promote the host city's flower and tourism industries, according to the event organizers.

Nanjing launches targeted enforcement campaigns
The IP authority of Nanjing recently launched two joint law enforcement campaigns, one of which targets major business areas, shopping streets, professional markets and exhibition venues, and the other is designed for industrial products and daily commodities sold on e-commerce platforms. The local government also plans to make public the details of a batch of major IP cases.

IP tribunal set to handle cross-regional cases
The Wuhan Intellectual Property Tribunal, the first cross-regional IP case-handling institution in the province, was established last week. Wuhan is one of China's first four cities to take part in the cross-regional IP case-handling program. The tribunal is responsible for not only criminal, civil and administrative IP lawsuits in Wuhan, but also civil and administrative cases about patents, new plant varieties, integrated circuit designs, business secrets and monopoly arcoss the province.
