Copyright conference focuses on digital products protection
The ongoing China Copyright Service Annual Conference is working to promote the Digital Copyright Identifier system and the integration of copyright services and the film industry. The conference is being held in the hope of improving creativity and originality in the animation sector and exploring the potential value of registered computer software copyright data. The annual event hosted by the Copyright Protection Center of China opened in the capital on Wednesday and will last through Friday.

China joins top 5 in Madrid system international ranking
Data from the World Intellectual Property Organization show that international trademark applications from China via the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks increased by nearly 30 percent compared with a year earlier, to more than 3,000 in 2016. It was the first time for China to join the top five on the Madrid chart with its record high in annual filings. Since China joined the agreement in 1989, it has long retained its position among the top 10 in terms of annual filings worldwide in the Madrid system.

Trademark authority regional office to open in Lanzhou
The national trademark authority will open an office at the Lanzhou administrative service center on March 1. After it starts operation, applicants from regions including Lanzhou, Baiyin and Dingxi will no longer be required to travel to Beijing to register and collateralize trademarks. The office will help the regions to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, widen financing channels and advance brand strategies.

Shenzhen cultural delegates bring works to New Zealand
A Chinese intangible cultural heritage delegation from Shenzhen started a four-day exchange event in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Feb 19. More than 20 items were showcased, including traditional paper-cutting, thangka painting and embroidery. Inheritors also taught local residents related skills at the event. Yu Zhi, head of the delegation, said that in recent years many national-level inheritors have attended international cultural communication activities organized by Shenzhen and have become an important role in the city's foreign cultural exchanges.

Autonomous region surpasses 10,000-filings benchmark
Organizations and individuals in the autonomous region filed 10,672 patent applications in 2016, increasing 20.2 percent year-on-year and surpassing the 10,000 benchmark for the first time. The number included 2,878 for inventions, 6,401 for utility patents and 1,393 for industrial designs. In the same year, nearly 6,000 patents were granted in the autonomous region.

Changsha procuratorate to specialize in IP crimes
A dedicated IP procuratorial bureau has been approved in Changsha, the first of its kind set up by a city-level procuratorate. The new office's responsibilities include investigation of IP criminal cases, launching lawsuits, supervision of IP law enforcement activities and prevention of crimes by taking advantage of duty in IP-related businesses.
