Scientists bank on new runway for Antarctica access

By Xinhua | China Daily | Updated: 2017-02-22 07:27

SYDNEY - Australian scientists are considering plans for a year-round runway in Antarctica to improve access to research sites.

Currently, the Australian Antarctica Division can only reach the sites by plane at certain times of the year using an ice runway.

However, if a year-round landing strip is built at one of the sites that are being evaluated, the AAD's capacity to explore Antarctica will increase significantly.
