A moment in time: Rising above leprosy

Abuluoha was a small and isolated village in Sichuan province's Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture. In the 1960s, about 300 leprosy patients moved there to receive treatment in isolation.

The old photo (above) was taken by an educational official in 2005. Elementary school kids exercised on a makeshift playground.

More than a decade later, the village has undergone huge changes. In this Jan 7 photo (below), children exercise on their concrete playground.
