1m professionals to be trained for SMEs

China plans to offer training to 1 million management and intellectual property professionals in small and medium-sized businesses within the next five years, according to a new policy recently released by the State Intellectual Property Office and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The policy is aimed at advancing the implementation of China's IP strategy in SMEs across the country to reconfigure their industrial structure, improve their capabilities in IP creation, use, protection and management, and sharpen their innovative edge by 2020.

Alliance founded to fight online fakes

A national intellectual property organization, founded by Chinese dotcom companies on Jan 20 and supported by the government, will step up the fight against both the online sale of counterfeit products and piracy to create an IP-friendly environment, its founders said. The alliance will also work to facilitate communication between governments and the industry, explore pressing issues facing the IP sector and increase international cooperation. Online retailer JD.com was elected as the first president of the alliance.

Clay figuring master's craftsmanship honored

A clay figuring show is being held at the Museum of Chinese Garden and Landscape Architecture and will run through April. The exhibits feature traditional craftsmanship that reportedly dates back to clay figuring master Zhang Mingshan, who was active during the Daoguang reign (1821-50) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). All of the 55 works on display were created by Lu Dong, who learned Zhang's original techniques. The event is part of the museum's series of intangible cultural heritage exhibitions.

First zone for intl online brands approved

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has approved a national cross-border e-commerce brands model zone in Ningbo, the first of its kind in the country. The move will enable policy support in quality management, technology supervision, administrative permission and standard formulation. More than 36 million cross-border e-commerce orders worth nearly 7.05 billion yuan ($1.02 billion) were shipped from Ningbo's bonded area from November 2013 to December 2016.

Province aims for top 10 ranking by 2020

The province in Central China aims to rank among the country's top 10 patent economies by 2020, with annual invention patent filings projected to rise to 30,000 by then, according to an intellectual property development blueprint recently released by the provincial intellectual property office. Its capital Changsha and two business hubs Zhuzhou and Xiangtan are expected to play key roles in achieving the goal, local officials said.

27 trademarks named to receive govt aid

The provincial government will prioritize support for 27 local trademarks in a move to advance the province's branding campaign, according to its annual work report, which was delivered on Monday. The brands include Tsingtao beer and Dong'e Ejiao, a traditional Chinese medicine tonic made by boiling and refining donkey skins. Local officials said they will increase cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization and encourage local businesses to apply for international trademarks.

Weeklong event promotes heritage

Folk performances staged at the Dragon and Tiger Mountain scenic site in Yingtan during the Spring Festival holiday proved immensely popular with visitors over the holiday period. During the weeklong event, performers from across the country offered a cultural feast, including dragon and lion dances, stilt walking, yangge (a form of Chinese folk dance that is especially popular in northern China), drum dances from Henan province and puppet shows from Shanxi province. Other forms of cultural craft such as paper-cutting, sugar painting, dough figurine and clay sculptures were also showcased.
