Confident teen predicting more dates with Destanee

By Agence France-Presse in Melbourne | China Daily | Updated: 2017-01-17 08:02

Teenage sensation Destanee Aiava promised her historic Australian Open appearance won't be her last after crashing out in the opening round on Monday.

Aiava, 16, became the first player born this century to contest a Grand Slam tournament, and she showed she could be a future force in her 6-3, 7-6 (4) loss to Germany's Mona Barthel.

The young Australian showed plenty of power and confident shot-making - as well as some nerves - as she ran Barthel close in the second set before succumbing in 92 minutes.
