Court heard more than 10k cases in 2016
The Beijing Intellectual Property Court has heard more than 20,000 IP cases and concluded more than 13,000 since its establishment in November 2014, according to a news conference held by the court on Tuesday. It heard 10,638 IP cases in 2016, a year-on-year increase of 15.74 percent. Compensation ruled by the court averaged 450,000 yuan ($65,015) for each case in 2015. Available statistics show patent infringement compensation averaged 1.41 million yuan last year, while trademark infringement compensation averaged 1.65 million yuan and copyright infringement compensation averaged 458,000 yuan.

Free trade zones to boost judicial oversight
The Supreme People's Court called for increased intellectual property judicial protection in China's pilot free trade zones by encouraging IP-collateralized loans and further investment, improving judicial policies and increasing punishment for IP infringement, according to a guideline unveiled by the court on Monday. The guideline also suggested the courts that are responsible for the zones should pay more attention to cross-border IP crimes.

Service center to bolster protection
The Shenzhen Notary Public Office set up an intellectual property service center on Jan 6 to specially handle IP notarization for companies and individuals in Shenzhen, the first of its kind in the province. The center offers services including IP authorization notarization and evidence preservation notarization. Xu Wenhai, vice-mayor of Shenzhen, said the center will help to increase litigation efficiency and support IP protection in the city.

Monthlong event to showcase heritage

The province will launch an activity, lasting from Jan 20 to Feb 27, to promote and showcase its intangible cultural heritage. About 800 performances and exhibitions will be held across the province during the monthlong event, which is expected to attract more than 17 million visitors. Shandong now has 173 State-level intangible cultural heritage items and 751 provincial-level items.

Licensing shows host intl projects, brands
More than 370 companies from 12 countries and regions around the world took part in the 15th Hong Kong International Licensing Show from Jan 9 to 11. The largest exhibition of its kind in Asia, the show gathered more than 900 projects and brands seeking licensing partners in animation, art, education, entertainment, fashion and catering businesses. The sixth Asian Licensing Conference was held alongside the show, inviting international experts to share their experience and ideas about licensing business opportunities.

Art, education focus of copyright office exhibit
The city's copyright exchange center launched a monthlong exhibit on Dec 30, 2016, to show copyright-protected artwork to local residents for free. It showcases four kinds of art at the event, such as Chinese paintings, paper-cutting and dough models, as well as several copyright derivatives including fans, scarves, bookmarks and cushions. Staff members at the center educate visitors on copyright-related issues.
