Item from Dec 6, 1993, in China Daily: Millions of Chinese children took candy-coated pills yesterday, marking the start of the nationwide polio immunization campaign. The drive is aimed at wiping out the disease by 1995.

China began implementing a planned vaccination program in 1978, and a national vaccination program in 2007.

Fourteen vaccines are now offered for free to cover 15 diseases.
