Item from Nov 22, 1995, in China Daily: A rule to regulate yangko in Beijing, following noise complaints from the public, is expected to come soon, sources with the Beijing Municipal Cultural Bureau said. ...
"The rule will prohibit yangko near government offices, schools, hospitals, residential areas and in parks with ancient buildings," said He Mingjie, an official with the bureau.
While yangko is still performed nationwide, the folk dance is not fashionable anymore. Its place has been taken by square dancing, which is popular among middle-aged women, or dama.
