Last year, the Capital Institute of Pediatrics in Beijing, one of the country's top children's hospitals, treated nearly 150 patients for exposure to unsafe medication at home.

A 2013 survey showed that the improper use of children's medication was widespread nationwide, with abuse rates ranging from 12 to 32 percent in major cities.
