Item from Nov 15, 1992, in China Daily: Foreign paper manufacturers are lining up to enter China, which has one of the oldest traditions of making paper in the world.

Asia surpassed North America and Europe as the world's largest producer of paper and paperboard in 2002. Ten years later, the production reached 182 million metric tons, of which more than 56 percent was made in China.

Last year, China's output of paper and paperboard topped 107 million tons while domestic consumption soared to more than 103 million tons, or one-fourth of the world's total.
