Item from Nov 11, 1982, in China Daily: Shanghai is taking steps to develop the Pudong area east of the Huangpu River, which city planners hope will provide new opportunities for its growth.

The name Pudong refers to its position as the east bank of the Huangpu River, which flows through central Shanghai.
