Item from Oct 21, 1981, in China Daily: China must continue to emphasize development of its coal and hydropower resources while exploring alternative forms of energy for the future, Vice-Premier Yu Qiuli told a government panel.

China has made significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by boosting renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and nuclear power. Under the country's 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), coal will make way for new energy.

At the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris last year, China pledged to cut its carbon emissions per unit of GDP by 60 to 65 percent from the 2005 levels within 15 years.
