What they say

China Daily | Updated: 2016-10-20 08:27

Guilin is a model city in balancing economic development and environmental protection. The scenery of Guilin is amazing. I think everybody should come to Guilin at least once during his or her lifetime.

Talib Rifai, secretary-general of United Nations World Tourism Organization

Guilin is a unique place for many reasons: The beauty of its nature and culture, the magic of the river and its amazing excursions. Guilin may require more effort to improve foreigners' traveling experience, for instance, better communications between airport staff, bus and taxi drivers and foreigners, and there should be more foreign-language signs and indicators.

The countryside is amazing. I can't speak any Chinese but I have no trouble booking tickets: People here are just so helpful. I find the landscape attractive as you can't see those karst mountains everywhere. It's also romantic to travel around by electric scooter, which you hardly see in Germany.

Guilin should use its far-reaching, efficient civil aviation network to attract more tourists from overseas. Guilin airport should cooperate more fully with Nanning airport to open more air routes to foreign destinations, especially in Southeast Asia.

Fan Chunming, executive at the Guangxi branch of China Southern Airlines

Guilin is on its way to becoming a top tourist resort in the world, from its present status as a renowned sightseeing destination. There should be routes and facilities that help tourists to have slow-paced tours and to better experience local life and culture. The city should launch cross-regional programs in cooperation with neighboring areas and mobilize resources in related industries, such as culture and agriculture, to enrich tourists' experience.

Wang Yan, general manager of Shangri-La Guilin

At the heart of downtown Guilin and its tourism industry, Xiufeng district attracts one-third of the city's tourists. It plans to integrate its cultural resources to enrich its tourism industry. A recent example is the rebuilding of Xiaoyao Tower, which had been one of the most renowned towers in China as it has rich cultural links. The district is a place where tourists can have a taste of genuine Guilin, either in the ancient Dongxi Xiang (East-West Alley) or in the countryside with a range of rustic activities.
