Item from Oct 17, 1988, in China Daily: Beijing has launched a campaign to control venereal diseases by setting up several prevention and treatment centers. Special research groups have also been formed in some districts.

The National Center for Sexually Transmitted Disease Research and Control was established in 1986 to guide STD control and surveillance programs across the country. Disease notifications are now collected in 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.

In 1994, more than 50,000 STD cases were reported. Gonorrhea remains the most prevalent STD, but syphilis and nongenital urethritis are also on the increase.
