China Daily | Updated: 2016-09-26 08:16

Item from Sept 26, 1995, in China Daily. Ostriches run in a plantation near the Yangpu Development Zone in South China's Hainan province.

Nearly 160 ostriches have been imported from the United States. Ostrich-raising is listed as a key project in the country's ninth Five-Year Plan (1996-2000).

China started importing artificially bred ostriches in 1992. A species indigenous to Africa, ostriches have been raised around the globe since the 1980s as their meat, eggs, feather and hair fetch good prices.
