Supply-side reforms to boost manufacturing
At a forum on Friday, Vice-Premier Ma Kai called for more to be done to promote supply-side reform as a tool to move the manufacturing sector up the value chain. He said the future is in the integration of manufacturing and the internet. He also called for a more friendly business environment to better protect intellectual property rights and help ensure orderly market competition.

Nation leads the way in microorganism tech
China now has the largest number of microorganism-related patents around the world, according to a report released by World Data Center for Microorganisms at the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences last week. The report said the country has made tremendous developments in this field from 2001 to 2015 and that it has published the world's second-largest number of related documents, behind the United States. To date, China has stored more than 182,000 bacterial strain species in 33 preservation centers.

Copyrighted arts contest launched in Jimo city
The first copyrighted works competition in Jimo city was launched last week. The competition is divided into literature and art as one group, and industrial design as the other. The competition organizer started collecting original works in August, including literature, music, dramas, dances, fine arts, photography, films, designs and software. Winners will be selected in January 2017 through expert panel appraisal and online voting.

Authorities plan holiday counterfeits crackdown
The city's market supervision authority recently launched a series of campaigns against the production and sale of counterfeit goods during the coming Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays. The programs' targets include food, drinks, clothes, daily commodities, house improvement materials and auto parts. The focuses are local famous brands and geographical indications.

First trademark financing mechanism is agreed
The Hubei provincial administration for industry and commerce signed an agreement with the Bank of Communication's Hubei branch on Friday to launch the first trademark financing mechanism in Central China. Companies can collateralize their trademarks with the bank or entrust guarantee institutions to acquire loans. Hubei companies had more than 200,000 valid trademarks in total by June this year.

Northeastern province inaugurates IP center
An intellectual property institute jointly set up by the State Intellectual Property Office, the provincial IP office and Dalian University of Technology was inaugurated at the university last week. It will be built into an important IP research center and training base to serve the province and Northeast China. SIPO and the provincial IP office will provide full support to the institute, in particular with regard to its construction of IP management and personnel training projects.

Brand protection forumheld for China and ASEAN
Under the theme of protection and development of brands and trademarks, the second China-ASEAN Industry and Commerce Forum held on Monday in Nanning. Senior government officials and scholars from China and ASEAN member countries shared information on their laws, regulations and the latest developments of trademarks. Also, they discussed how to increase exchange and cooperation in IP. The event was the first high-end trademark-themed forum between China and ASEAN members. The first session was held in 2014.
