IRAQ

More oil well fires put out at field

Iraq has put out fires at six more oil wells in the Qayyara region, which Iraqi forces recaptured from Islamic State group late last month, but at least three fires are still blazing, the oil ministry said on Tuesday. The extremists sabotaged much of Qayyara's oil infrastructure before fleeing ahead of the government advance, sending black smoke into the sky for days and oil pouring into main thoroughfares.

TURKEY

Captain arrested over boat sinking

The captain of a tourist boat that sunk over the weekend off the resort of Antalya during bad weather was arrested on Tuesday. Two people were killed, state media said. The boat - rigged up with two masts and sails to look like a pirate galleon - capsized on Saturday after being hit by a storm while doing a standard tourist tour. At least 86 people on board survived.

AUSTRALIA

Prisoners strike for better pay

Inmates at a jail housing murderers and drug dealers have gone on strike demanding better pay, claiming their wages are not enough to cover living costs in the top-security prison. Dozens of convicts have put down tools and are refusing to work, claiming the lack of inflation-indexed pay is disrespectful. Inmates at Barwon prison must work as part of their sentence.

THAILAND

Bomb kills father, daughter at school

A four-year-old girl and her father were killed when a bomb hidden in a motorcycle was detonated outside a school in the insurgency-plagued south, authorities said on Tuesday. The device, packed in the fuel tank of the parked motorcycle, struck as pupils and teachers filed into the school in Narathiwat province for the start of the day. A dozen other adults were wounded.
