Given that the international community is seeking economic and social development through the drive of technological innovation, and given the nature of being an inter-governmental organization that focuses on issues such as science and technology, what are UNESCO's expectations for the G20 Leaders Summit in Hangzhou?
The past half-century has seen uneven global progress. Economies have generally prospered, but the "trickle-down", natural resource-intensive and industry-based development pathway adopted by most countries has shown its limitations, leading to challenges that we can no longer afford to ignore, such as climate change; loss of biodiversity; water, energy and food scarcity; rampant urbanization; inequality; and exclusion.
