When Roberta Lipson first came to China from the United States in 1979, she sensed an opportunity to help improve the country's public health and medical services by demonstrating a different approach to healthcare.
Since her business at that time was to help Chinese hospitals import technology, Lipson witnessed a sharp contrast between China and her homeland in terms of hospital services and facilities designed for would-be mothers.
Lipson and her colleagues introduced the first ultrasound machine to China. Before that, many skilled Chinese doctors had to depend on stethoscopes, their touch and experience to diagnose and evaluate possible fetal growth restriction.
