The 2008 sites - then and now

By Feng Xiuxia | China Daily | Updated: 2016-09-03 08:19

The desolate site of giant venues sliding into disuse and disrepair after major sporting events is commonplace in many cities, but not in Beijing.

Twelve new permanent venues were built in the Chinese capital's downtown and suburban areas for the 2008 Olympics, and most of them are still operating in various business modes, such as mass fitness programs, commercial developments and elite athletic training sites.

"The venues have been well cared for. They've seen a lot of uses and are hugely popular with visitors. As major legacies of the 2008 Olympics, the facilities have benefited the public's pursuit of healthy lifestyles and sports entertainment in Beijing," said Jiang Xiaoyu, vice-chairman of the Beijing Olympic City Development Association.
