CAEXPO charts course to shared harbor for information

Officials announce at last year's expo that the China-ASEAN Information Harbor base had started operations.

The annual China-ASEAN Expo in Nanning is devoted to developing an "Information Silk Road" that will link China and the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

As an international business gala sponsored by the governments of China and ASEAN members, CAEXPO, as it is known, has played an important role in cooperation on telecommunications and information networks between China and the members of ASEAN.

In an era driven by information technologies, interconnectivity has gone beyond the traditional transportation links.

In recent years, a range of events relating to information networks and telecommunications have been held at the expo hosted by the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. These include the China-ASEAN Information and Telecommunication Ministerial Meeting, which aims to publicize the latest policies of each country and propose practical and feasible measures for cooperation.

During the fifth CAEXPO in 2008, a China-ASEAN Telecom Week was held, aimed at building an information exchange platform for deepening China-ASEAN cooperation in information and communication technology. The event included such activities as the China-ASEAN ICT Ministerial Forum, China-ASEAN ICT Business Forum and a forum for the management of radio frequencies and their regional coordination. A number of agreements were reached at the expo.

An important outcome from this information cooperation is the China-ASEAN Information Harbor, an initiative to facilitate the sharing of information to serve the booming trade and investment between China and ASEAN members.

Consensus between China and the ASEAN members on establishing the information harbor was reached during the 11th CAEXPO in 2014.

Operation of the China-ASEAN Information Harbor was announced at the 12th expo in September last year, with delegates from both sides unveiling the plaque for the base in Nanning. The operator of the base is the China-ASEAN Information Harbor Co Ltd.

During the 13th China-ASEAN Expo to open on Sept 11, a number of IT and communications-related forums and meetings will be held, including the China-ASEAN Information Harbor Forum and the China-ASEAN E-Commerce Summit, to further deepencooperation in information sharing.
