Samsung launches countersuit against Huawei

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co said on July 22 that it had filed a countersuit at Beijing Intellectual Property Court against Huawei and a local department store selling Huawei products. It claimed compensation of 80.5 million yuan ($12 million) from each defendant, saying in a statement that Huawei's smartphones and tablets infringed on its six patents. In May, Huawei sued Samsung in both the United States and China for patent infringements on 4G technology and software interface.

Cross-regional system aims to aid innovation, protection

An agreement was recently signed by the State Intellectual Property Office and the IP authorities of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province to build a cross-regional system for IP protection, application and service, which is anticipated to improve the efficiency of innovation in the area. To transform the area into a driving force of IP development, the North China IP operating center will be built in Tianjin, exploiting its regional IP and financial resources.

Forum discusses Chinese brands' expansion

The second China Brand Economy (Shanghai) Forum held on Saturday attracted more than 400 domestic and foreign representatives. With the theme of "supply-side structural reform and brand economy development", the forum discussed topics including Chinese brands' overseas expansion, creative design and brand economy. Shanghai is itself a world-famous brand and would promote the healthy development of city, industry and company brands, a local senior official said.

New strategy to boost protection, subsidies

IP infringement will be recorded into personal and corporate credit systems, according to the provincial government's latest IP strategy. The government encouraged businesses to take a range of precautionary measures to improve the protection of their commercial secrets, including using the big data, cloud computing and Internet of Things technologies. The strategy also indicates that the government will provide subsidies and awards to patented programs accordingly to reach the current goal of 24,000 annual patent applications.

Zhuhai sets up fund to boost city's pledges

The Zhuhai government has decided to set up a risk compensation fund of 40 million yuan ($5.9 million) for intellectual property pledge loans, the first of its kind in the city. The fund is expected to push the total value of the city's IP pledges beyond 400 million yuan by 2020. Zhuhai currently has a very low success rate in using IP rights as collateral. Among its more than 20,000 valid patents, only 78 have been collateralized.

Guangdong firms hailed for accomplishments

At an IP summit forum held in Guangzhou, 50 Guangdong companies, including GAC Motor, Midea and KuGou, were recognized for their IP accomplishments. The companies are expected to play a leading role, sharpening and utilizing their IP edges in market competition, said Ma Xianmin, head of the provincial IP office. The award campaign is part of Guangdong's comprehensive efforts in IP development, which also contribute to substantial growth in patent applications.

Seminar launches new industry alliance

An IP alliance for the building materials and furniture industry was launched at a recent IP seminar by a number of industry associations. More than 40 local companies in the sector also signed a self-discipline protocol at the event that aims to strengthen IP protection and improve local companies' competitiveness by encouraging them to build their brands and increase their design ability.
