It was a sight I thought I would never see on a Beijing subway train - a person not hooked to a cellphone!
What went wrong, I wondered as I glanced around at other passengers glued to their mobile devices.
One man grinned, then grimaced, and then grinned again as he switched between screens showing share price fluctuations.
