Item from June 20, 1999, in China Daily: A customer considers a milk product made of materials imported from New Zealand at the Qianmen Shopping City in downtown Beijing. Beijingers have become sensitive about milk products sold in the local market since the discovery of the cancer-causing chemical dioxin in animal feed in Belgium.

China, the world's largest importer of milk products, will tighten supervision on baby formula with a new regulation taking effect in October, according to the China Food and Drug Administration.

Under the new rule, foreign formula producers must secure permits from the country's food safety watchdog before entering China.
