China Daily | Updated: 2016-06-13 07:19

Item from June 13, 1983, in China Daily: China's Zhu Jianhua set a new world high-jump record of 2.37 meters at a preliminary competition for the Fifth National Games in Beijing on Saturday. Zhu, 20, listed as No 1 in last year's world high-jump rankings, beat the previous record of 2.36 meters set by Gerd Wessig in 1980 in Moscow.

After Zhu Jianhua's victory in 1983, he went on to break the world record twice more - in 1983 and 1984 - and increased it from 2.38 to 2.39 meters. The latter stood until August 1985, when Rudolf Povarnitsyn of Russia beat it by 1 centimeter.

Chinese athletes have recently been clocking major track and field achievements.
