Officials: Old and new must blend

Activities will be held on China Cultural Heritage Day on June 11 to promote the integration of intangible cultural heritage items with contemporary life and the commercialization of traditional craftsmanship, according to the Ministry of Culture. Officials said integrating intangible cultural items with modern society is both key to their protection and also a great challenge. They called for the introduction of a range of measures to aid the integration process.

New office for local companies

The State Intellectual Property Office's patent search and consulting center set up a new branch in Shenzhen last week, the third of its kind in Guangdong province and the seventh nationwide. The new center will mainly serve companies in the Pearl River Delta area and provide one-stop, high-end patent information services based on the city's innovation-driven development strategy. Established in 1993, the center is one of China's most authoritative institutes in patent search and analysis.

City gets first IP disputes center

Zhuhai's first arbitration center for intellectual property disputes opened last week at the city's Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone. Local officials said the center will greatly aid rapid economic growth in the zone and create an innovative atmosphere for entrepreneurship. The city's arbitration system has dealt with almost 900 disputes in the past three years.

Maglev line gets onsite services

A team from the People's Procuratorate of Jiang'an district in Wuhan will provide onsite IP services for China's first low-speed maglev rail line in Changsha, during its future operation. The agreement on IP protection was reached in 2014 between the procuratorate and China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group, contractor of the maglev project. The domestically developed line in Changsha, Hunan province, started trial operations with passengers on May 6.

Region to focus on transformation

The autonomous region plans to highlight the development of patent-intensive industries during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20) to promote industrial transformation and foster new sources of economic growth. By 2020, patent-intensive industries will contribute 30 percent of Guangxi's total industrial output value and more than 30 local companies will each have at least 100 invention patents, according to the region's government. It will also build at least five patent-intensive industrial zones and 10 patent cultivation demonstration centers.
