Zhang Tao released Dao Shi Chu Shan (Monk Comes Out of the Mountain) on the web last year.

While the horror film cost 280,000 yuan ($42,500) to make, the new director has to date received some 50 million yuan in revenue from its online viewing.

Once the filmmaker struggled to raise money, but today he is being chased by financiers, as part of a growing trend: Chinese watching films on mobile devices.
