Central SOEs register over 100,000 patents
The centrally administered State-owned enterprises owned about 100,000 invention patents by 2014, with the number of annual applications increasing 30 percent on average since 2011, according to a news conference of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission last week. Over the same period, their total research and development investment increased from 270 billion yuan ($41.2 billion) to 350 billion yuan.

Tianjin customs signs on with Beijing, Hebei
The Tianjin customs department has signed an agreement with its Beijing and Hebei counterparts for strengthened coordination in IP protection. According to the agreement, the three authorities will cooperate more closely in information exchanges, law enforcement operations, investigations and analyses of infringement trends to improve their enforcement ability and efficiency. The agreement is part of the integration plan of the Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei customs departments.

Institute initiates high-tech patent pool
The first patent pool for high-performance materials in China was launched last week at the Changzhou Institute of Energy Storage Materials and Devices. It focuses on high-performance materials and applications and includes nearly 400 patents. Executives from the institute said the patent pool will help maximize the value of the related intellectual property. The patent pool's member companies will also have closer research and development cooperation.

Cultural fair offers rights registration
An exhibition area for intellectual property, along with a copyright service station, was set up for the first time at the China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair this month. Officials from the provincial copyright administration offered copyright registration services and initiated enforcement campaigns. The service station received more than 60 copyright applications on May 12, the first day of the event, for a wide range of products including animations, porcelain and creative designs.

Police arrest 5 for counterfeit lenses
The Guangzhou police announced that they have dealt with a major case involving counterfeit contact lenses with potential market value of more than 10 million yuan ($1.5 million). Cooperating with local police, they arrested five suspects at a factory in April in Langxi, Anhui province, and found more than 400,000 counterfeit contact lenses, nearly 100,000 packages and 2.2 million labels.

Local prosecutors address lawsuits
The first IP protection center in the province has been founded in the Dalian High-tech Zone. Operated by the prosecutors in the zone, the center will handle IP lawsuits and complaints, and offer legal services and consultations. It has also established cooperation with other administrations. Officials from the zone's administration said the center will effectively help contain IP infringement in the area and protect the innovations of local companies.
