Forbes Travel Guide has released its annual Star Rating list, with Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund and Waldorf Astoria Spa joining its five-star ranking.

Marriott International's cluster of hotels in East China hosted the 2016 Marriott East China Charity Golf Tournament at the Shanghai Agile Mickelson Shanghai International Club in early May, with all proceeds donated to the hotel group's charity partner, the Yao Foundation, to support the education of rural children. More than 130 people including Yao Ming, former NBA star and the founder of the Yao Foundation, participated in the event.

The Langham Rising Star Chinese Culinary Competition 2016, staged at Langham Place, Guangzhou, last week, attracted 24 young chefs from the Langham Hospitality Group's three Chinese restaurant brands in China - T'ang Court, Ming Court and Yat Tung Heen - to represent their respective hotels by demonstrating their culinary talents and skills.

New record

Mao Weidong, a member of China's SWAT team, set a new world record of 8 hours, 1 minute and 1 second for the plank on May 14. Ten top international isometric strength exercise enthusiasts, including former world recorder holder and retired United States marine George Hood, were invited to the 2016 Plank World Cup held in Shangri-La Hotel Beijing.
