Former Marine admits to strangling woman

By Agencies in Tokyo | China Daily | Updated: 2016-05-21 08:06

A male civilian working for the US military arrested for dumping the corpse of a Japanese woman in her twenties admitted to strangling her, local police officials said on Friday, sparking a torrent of fury from the Japanese government toward the United States just one week before US President Barack Obama is scheduled to make a visit to Hiroshima.

Police arrested 32-year-old Kenneth Franklin Shinzato, a former US Marine on Thursday, following evidence leading them to find he had dumped the dead body of 20-year-old Rina Shimabukuro in a forested area on the night of April 28 or in the early hours of the morning thereafter.

Shimabukuro, a company employee working in Uruma city, went missing on April 28 after going for a walk, with the official filing of her disappearance being made the following day to the police by her boyfriend.
