Culture: Creating kites that soar

Zhang Tianwei, from Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province, has been making kites for three decades. In 1952, Zhang, then 11, was amazed by a story about special kites with dynamic structures that could "change" their shapes in the sky. Zhang was determined to make kites like those. One of his creations, fashioned like a three-dimensional green lantern, won a major prize in 1986. The achievement marked the official start of Zhang's journey in the craft.
