Expert: Plate motions to blame

By Zheng Jinran | China Daily | Updated: 2016-04-18 07:51

The recent series of devastating earthquakes, which hit in Japan, Afghanistan and Indonesia, have a close relationship with plate motions, and demonstrate that the active seismic period has come as some experts said.

Since April 10, when a 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Afghanistan, several massive earthquakes have hit many other regions frequently including the 6.5-magnitude quake and following 7.3-magnitude quake in Japan on Friday and Saturday, and the 7.2-magnitude quake on Myanmar on April 13.

"The continuous massive quakes in the world have some connection," Sun Shihong, a researcher working for the China Earthquake Networks Center, said in an interview with China Central Television on Sunday.
