Nation draws nearer to finalizing first standard on graphene
China is inching closer to adopting its first national standard on graphene material. The draft, launched on the website of the Standardization Administration of China and made available for public opinion last week, defines graphene and other related terms. The country's proposal for an international graphene standard recently received preliminary approval from the International Organization for Standardization and is expected to be initiated in the second half of the year.

Drug for chronic hepatitis B to begin mass production in Qingdao facility
A pharmaceutical drug made in China and claimed to be a cure for the chronic hepatitis B virus recently finished clinical trials and is expected to start mass-production this year at a facility in Qungdao that is due to be completed by August. As a national major new drug development project, it has cost Beijing-based Genova Biotech 15 years and a total investment of over 1 billion yuan ($154.7 million). The drug, Novaferon, will be priced 50-percent cheaper than imported drugs with the same function, according to the company.

Authorities shutter hundreds of illegal websites for pirated content
The copyright authorities in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region have shut down 871 illegal websites that had pirated content last year, handing down criminal punishments to 139 people and seizing more than 50,000 pirated products. The authority cooperated with multiple other agencies to conduct joint operations against piracy in 2015. Officials said Inner Mongolia, which has a rich culture of ethnic music, dance, architecture and design, requires strict copyright protection.

Copyrights surge through 3 months of year after free registration offer
Companies and individuals in the province registered 8,262 copyrights through March after the provincial government began offering free copyright registration at the beginning of the year. The total represents a 2.7-fold increase compared with the same period last year. The government streamlined its copyright registration procedure and has encouraged companies to create high value-added industry chains by adapting copyrighted works into animation, mobile games, movies and TV dramas.

Qualcomm, Gree subsidiary sign 3G, 4G telecom technology deal
US chipmaker Qualcomm recently signed an agreement with Zhuhai-based Ewpe, a subsidiary of Chinese household appliance giant Gree, licensing its patents for 3G and 4G telecommunications technologies to the Chinese company. The agreement allows Ewpe to manufacture and sell smartphone chips under the WCDMA, CDMA-2000 and LTE standards. Most of China's smartphone makers have signed patent licenses with Qualcomm, including Huawei, ZTE, Xiaomi, Lenovo and Haier.

Monkey King Green Tea zone gains approval from govt
The province has gained approval from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine to establish its first demonstration zone of a geographical indication product in Huangshan. The Monkey King Green Tea, which grows on the foothills of Huangshan Mountain, was granted a GI status in 2003. Regarded as one of the top 10 teas in China, it is famous for its elegant long leaves and fragrance.
