EU chamber honors protection efforts of 6 Chinese regional govts
The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China have handed out IP Friendly Awards to six Chinese provinces and municipalities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Tianjin, Shandong and Zhejiang. Officials from the chamber said at the award ceremony last week in Beijing that China's legal environment and law enforcement have improved remarkably in recent years. The awards were established to honor the efforts of the Chinese government in IP protection.

Sixth base for research in nation established at Dalian institute
The sixth national-level intellectual property strategy implementation research base in China, and the first in Northeast China, was established at the Dalian University of Technology. Approved by the State Intellectual Property Office, the institution will conduct research on regional, national and global IP strategies to support the nation's efforts in building a strong IP powerhouse. The five other bases are in Beijing (with two), Wuhan, Shanghai and Tianjin.

Compensation system aims to better protect rights of owners
IP rights violators will pay compensation equal to two or three times the actual loss suffered by the owner of the IP rights, according to the latest local regulation in Shenzhen that is currently in a public review period. Industry insiders said many owners of IP rights have won their lawsuits but have had to pay high costs to defend them. The punitive compensation means strengthened protection, they said.

City holds exhibition to connect local inventors with investors
A patent exhibition for local inventors was held in Shenzhen on March 30. About 100 inventors, some of them from outside Shenzhen, showcased their projects to seek investors and partners. Organizers said the event provided a platform to integrate resources and talent to encourage patent commercialization. Some participants proposed an association for local inventors that would allow them to have access to services such as training and investment introductions.

Region proposes goal of reaching 150K inventions by end of 2020
The Guangxi intellectual property office recently unveiled plans to reach the lofty goal of at least 150,000 invention patent applications during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20). The invention patent ownership per 10,000 residents in Guangxi is targeted to reach six by 2020, doubling the number at the end of 2015. The plan will grant an award of 500,000 yuan ($77,300) to each company with more than 1,000 patents, and 30,000 yuan for each overseas patent application.

Railway equipment maker receives first patent from European agency
After nearly four years of examinations, Chinese railway equipment manufacturing company CRRC Tangshan Co Ltd won its first patent from the European Patent Office. The patent, for a "troubleshooting and energy-absorbing device and leading car of motor train unit", contains a flexible device against potential impact to guarantee the stability and safety of the vehicle. The company also owns three patents in the United States.
