Brief introduction to SJTU and timeline of key events
Shanghai Jiao Tong University is a premier higher-education institution that has a long history and enjoys a world-renowned reputation. It is a key university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education, and was jointly sponsored by the ministry and the Shanghai Municipal Government. Through 120 years of unremitting effort, SJTU has become one of the top comprehensive, research-oriented and internationally recognized universities in China.
Today, SJTU has 62 undergraduate programs covering nine major disciplines: economics, law, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and the arts.
SJTU has 29 schools and departments, 25 directly affiliated institutions, and 13 affiliated hospitals, with 16,188 undergraduates and 28,842 postgraduates, of whom 2,134 are international students. The university faculty includes 2,793 full-time teachers, of whom 890 are professors, 22 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 24 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 131 distinguished professors and chair professors of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program, 116 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and many other talented staff.
