Plans to set up an internationally affiliated South China Sea research center were announced on Friday, the last day of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2016.

The China-Southeast Asia Research Center on the South China Sea will involve think tanks in different countries, such as China's National Institute for South China Sea Studies and Indonesia's Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Wu Shicun, president of the National Institute for South China Sea Studies, said the center is expected to become a platform for communications on the South China Sea issue and a new model for maritime research cooperation among countries in the region.
